Backyard Biofuels is a collaborative project of the Saint Louis Science Center and the Center for Advanced Biofuel Systems at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. It is supported through grants from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.

Backyard Biofuels: A Citizen Science Project

The Saint Louis Science Center is collaborating with the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in an exciting research project that with your help has the potential to discover algae species located within the St. Louis metro area which may be used in cutting-edge biofuels research.

In 2010, 169 algae collecting kits were returned to the Life Science Lab.  From those samples, we were able to isolate and test 105 individual algae strains.  To find out more about our results, click here (2010 results section).

We still need your help!  Maybe you will find the algae that will one day power all the cars and planes in the world!
